The pandemic may have completely turned the music industry’s traditional business model upside down, but artists have found all sorts of avenues to make many millions of dollars in 2021, according to Variety. Now Bruce Springsteen has also made it to the top of Rolling Stone magazine’s 10 highest paid musicians list!

And the big winners were almost all white and male, according to Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “10 highest-paid musicians” released on Friday (US time).

Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Taylor Swift are the three exceptions to the list, which includes Paul Simon, Ryan Tedder, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lindsey Buckingham, Motley Crue, Bruce Springsteen, and Blake Shelton.

The list, compiled by former Forbes correspondent Zack O’Malley Greenburg, includes several artists who cashed in their song catalogs for nine figures last year, and now one of them is Bruce Springsteen.

The leader of the pack, reports ‘Variety’, was Bruce Springsteen, who not only sold his publishing and music recording rights to Sony Music for a figure of around $550 million in December, but was also the rare artist to deserve a sane Sum of live performances, with his summer revival of Springsteen on Broadway.

Seven of the 10 made the list based on catalog sales, with the only exceptions being Jay-Z, Kanye West and Taylor Swift, who had big years with either non-music companies like West’s Yeezy shoe empire or Jay’s sale of half his champagne line.

Or, to quote ‘Variety’, it was a “goodness of heavily streamed and sold music,” as in the case of Swift’s four albums released in just 18 months (along with lucrative partnerships with Peloton and Starbucks). Also of note is a previously undisclosed $50 million catalog deal from Blake Shelton.

“And in a sad reflection of the state of the world, with those exceptions, the list is all older white males – with Stevie Nicks, who inked a $100 million catalog deal with Primary Wave, just missing the cutoff ”, concludes ‘diversity’. The overall record of the top 10? $2.3 billion.
