The Ministry of Sport’s Olympic Cell (MOC) mission has approved the inclusion of alpine skier Mohammad Arif Khan in the core group of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) until the Winter Olympics, due to take place in Beijing, China next month.
Khan will take part in the slalom and giant slalom competitions of the Winter Olympics. He was also granted Rs 17.46 lakh under TOPS for training in Europe and equipment procurement in advance of the major event in China. Khan is currently training in Austria, where he is accompanied by his trainer and physio.
The MOC approved the 35-day European training camp for Arif, which began after he qualified for the Winter Olympics. He confirmed his place in giant slalom during a competition in Montenegro last December.
A month earlier he had also earned his place in the slalom event. With this achievement, Khan achieved the unique distinction of being the first Indian to win direct quota places at two different Winter Olympics and also being the first athlete in the country to win a place at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
The athlete based in Gulmarg J&K won two gold medals in slalom and giant slalom at the 2011 South Asian Winter Games in Uttarakhand.
In addition, Arif Khan had previously participated in both editions of the Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg J&K.
Fittingly, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had previously sanctioned rupees ten lakhs in favor of Arif Khan so that he could continue his education.
The golfer Subhankar Sharma from Jammu has been accepted into the TOPS Development Group.
