Why can’t Donald Trump be happy for the Republicans?

Analysis by Chris Cillizza, CNN Editor-at-Large

Everywhere you look these days there is good political news for Republicans.

Earlier this month they swept the Virginia statewide offices and almost angered the Democratic governor of New Jersey. President Joe Biden’s approval rating remains in the low 40s. The general vote in Congress is moving in the direction of the Republicans. Inflation – and the role of the Biden government in it – is dominating the news.

Virtually any political expert looking at the national political environment predicts that Republicans are a favorite to regain control of the House of Representatives and a decent bet to swing the Senate as well. “Democrats shouldn’t panic. You should be in shock, ”New York Times columnist Tom Edsall wrote on Wednesday in an article detailing how bad things are for the Democrats.

Then there is Donald Trump.

The former president says things are going badly in the Republican Party – all because of the Senate minority leader, Mitch McConnell.

Regarding the passing of a $ 1 trillion infrastructure package voted for by 19 Republican senators – including McConnell – and the possibility of a $ 1.75 trillion social safety net bill, Trump said the following :

“All of this was made possible by the incompetence of Mitch McConnell, and now I understand that a couple of Republican Senators could come on board to claim another and even greater victory for the Democrats and, at the same time, for massive inflation and the destruction of ours Country as we know it. “

Trump added: “Now the Democrats have a big win and the wind on their backs.”

Which, well, not so much? We can certainly discuss whether the passing of the Infrastructure Act and the Act on Social Safety Nets could work in Biden’s political favor at some point in the future. But for now – and despite the fact that many elements of both bills are popular – they have done very little to move the needle for Biden.

Then why is Trump upset? Why can’t he be happy for his party, which is probably in the best political place for years?

The answer is simple: Trump doesn’t really care about the fate of the broader Republican Party. He cares about Trump – first, last, and always.

McConnell isn’t doing exactly what Trump thinks of him. That is why McConnell, who not for nothing can look back on a much longer political success story than Trump, blows everything and fools the Republicans.

But – and stop me if you’ve heard this before – there is simply no evidence of the dark political stance Trump appears to be building for Republicans.

Trump cannot be happy about the current position of his party because he does not get all the recognition for it and it is not implemented the way he wants. As simple as that.

He is now – and never has been – a team player. His association with the Republican Party – after his various party changes before running for president in 2016 – was a matter of convenience, not of conviction.

And now that absolutely everyone is predicting a great year for the GOP in 2022, they can’t even pretend to be happy about it.
