Google usually releases new updates for Pixels at the beginning of each month. The November update passed a few weeks ago and brought in smaller nips and tucks. However, the company has now released a surprising mid-month update for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.

According to 9to5Google, the update is numbered SD1A.210817.037 for global pixels and SD1A.210817.037.A1 for Verizon variants. Below are download links for your specific model.

While Google has not yet published a changelog, Verizon (h / t DroidLife) claims that the patch improves “the performance” of the fingerprint sensor in the display. The sensor’s unreliability is an issue highlighted by several Android Authority users and reviewers. In particular, some Reddit owners have reported that the update actually improves the sensor’s speed and reliability. Others, however, notice little change.

Mid-month patches are pretty rare for Google, but the sensor was probably an urgent concern. The company initially claimed that the sensor was slower and less reliable due to the “advanced security algorithms” used. It is unclear whether this update also fixed another bug that could break the sensor if the battery was empty.
