""Olympic Games"" – Google News
The Illawarra Olympic Wall at the south end of the park celebrates the efforts of sports stars from the local government areas of Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven and Wingecarribee who have participated in the Summer and Winter Olympics since the beginning of the modern Olympic Games. It was installed in Wollongong ahead of the 2000 Sydney Olympics and was the first of its kind in Australia.
Call for volunteers for the “Olympic Wall” project from Illawarra – Wollongong Over the years, the IOFC has been the patron of the wall and responsible for accepting new Olympians and recognizing their achievements. Now they want to work closely with the Wollongong Council and four other Illawarra councils to extend the recognition of the wall to the Paralympians of Illawarra.
“For some time now, the Illawarra Olympic Wall has honored Olympic athletes who have connections with our community. We would like to extend this recognition to the Paralympians of our cities, who have achieved great success for themselves and the sports history of Illawarra. “It is likely that the task force will have to meet regularly over the next 12 to 18 months to compile a list of Illawarra Paralympians both past and present.”
“The council wants representatives from each of the five local Illawarra counties on the working group. We are looking for people who can demonstrate that they have local sports networks that will help identify past Paralympic participants. “We are very proud of all local athletes, including the many extraordinary people who have strived to become Paralympians and represent their country and local community,” said Lucielle Power, director of Wollongong City Council
Local Paralympian Jonathan Goerlach is the first volunteer to join the new working group. He said he hoped to ensure equal recognition of past, present and future Paralympists. Simon Kersten, chairman of the Illawarra Olympic Fundraising Committee, said the wall was an initiative of the Illawarra Olympic Fundraising Committee (IOFC) and the local community with the support of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC).
“We believe it would be a great tribute to the local Paralympic athletes to create a section of the wall to remember them. The IOFC is keen to be part of the process and recognize these fantastic local athletes. ”“ ‘Para’ at the Paralympics is defined as ‘parallel to’ which means parallel to the Olympics. It is crucial that Illawarra is viewed as a region where all the achievements of Olympians and Paralympists are recognized at the same time – a symbolic step towards equality and inclusion, ”said Goerlach.
This is a big project as identifying local Paralympian names is not as straightforward as it may seem. “’Para’ in the Paralympics is defined as ‘parallel to’ which means parallel to the Olympic Games. It is crucial that Illawarra is viewed as a region where all the achievements of Olympians and Paralympists are recognized at the same time – a symbolic step towards equality and inclusion, ”said Goerlach.
