TL; DR

  • Some Pixel 6 series owners report that their phones randomly call contacts.
  • The error seems to be related to the Google Assistant even though the error occurred while some users were sleeping.

Update: November 8, 2021 (12:30 p.m. ET): A Google spokesman confirmed in a statement to 9to5Google that he is “aware” of the random call error and is working on a solution. However, the company made no indication of when this fix will be issued to affected users.

Original article: Nov. 5, 2021 (4:26 p.m. ET): Google’s Pixel 6 phones are arguably the best devices the search giant has ever produced, with premium specs and competitive prices. The phones seem to have a few bugs at this point, and it seems we can add one more bug to the list.

A Reddit thread (h / t: Twitter user @erivaldoff) described a Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro bug where the phones accidentally call random contacts. The thread has a number of people complaining about the glitch, with many commenting that their phone was left alone or in their pocket when the call took place.

This seems to be due to the Google Assistant, which apparently registers phone call commands. However, some Redditors found that the invocation error occurred while they were sleeping or their surroundings were completely calm. So it doesn’t look like the Assistant has misinterpreted background noise or a conversation.

Users on Google’s Pixel Community forum also reported the problem, saying the butt dials occurred while the phone was in their pocket. Some users on this forum also noticed that the phones dial the same contact each time rather than a random contact, forcing them to delete the phone number as a workaround. Some Redditors also said they turned off Assistant’s lock screen feature to fix the bug.

We contacted Google representatives to find out more about this issue and if the company is working on a solution. We’ll update the article when the company gets back to us.
