Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest Eternals project is said to be banned in many countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait, according to sources. The reason for this seems to be due to the gay relationship portrayed in the film. Read on to find out more!

The MCU-released film comes after the September release of Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. The film focuses on heroes who have just stepped in as Earth’s new line of defense.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the reason Chloe Zhao’s director (Eternals) was banned from the Gulf was because of Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos and Ben (played by Haaz Sleiman) gay relationship in the film. Phastos is a member of the Eternals, a weapons inventor and technology expert who shares a child with his husband, Ben. This is the very first same-sex couple in the MCU.

The THR also stated that edit requests were made by local censor groups that Disney closed down. The film was due to air on the other side of the gulf on November 11th. The film is slated to appear on big screens in the United Arab Emirates.

Written by Zhao, Ryan Firpo, and Kaz Firpo, Eternals spawns a new group of superheroes who have lived on Earth for 7,000 years. They were created by beings called Celestials and were tasked with protecting the earth from the deviants, their deformed and evil counterparts.

Eternals plays a highly talented cast of actors including Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, Lia McHugh, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Gil Birmingham, Harish Patel and Kit Harington.

The film didn’t wow the critics, however, as it has a “lazy” score of 51 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. This is according to 225 reviews. The critical consensus is, “Eternals is an ambitious superhero epic that climbs as often as it strikes. Eternals takes the MCU in fascinating and at times confusing new directions.”
