NYC Marathon: Ben Trues Marathon debut

NYT > Sports

He made his marathon debut in New York because of his strong relationship with the New York Road Runners, who run the marathon, and his love of pure competition. Unlike some other major marathons, New York does not employ pacemakers. And on a notoriously demanding course, elite runners chase each other and not the clock.

On Sunday he will face a charged field, including Kenenisa Bekele from Ethiopia, a four-time Olympic medalist and five-time world champion. True has never ridden a wristwatch before, he said, but plans to wear one to the marathon to protect himself from himself. He is familiar with the track and knows how runners can gain momentum at various points in the race, such as mile 16 at Queensboro Bridge.

“I’m someone who makes a living from clinging to someone and never letting go,” said True. “But if Bekele falls 4:30 mile off the bridge, I probably shouldn’t be trying to keep up with him.”

True wants to exercise patience, a component of success that has occasionally been in short supply for him. He thought back to 2019 when he had filled his schedule with races and competed over 5,000 meters in the World Championships with an Achilles tendon injury. He should have taken some time off, he said, but is afraid of losing his health insurance if his world rankings collapse.

“I was just in so much pain,” he said, “and I really thought I had to either step back or make big changes. Luckily Dan showed up. “

True had circulated an unconventional offer in the high-end running scene: he would pay someone $ 20,000 to run with them. He went without a taker for a few years.

“I’m not sure if people thought I was serious,” he said.

Curts, who worked in the state of Iowa, was at home in Maine when he learned from mutual friends that True was looking for a workout partner. He moved to New Hampshire last fall and then recruited Huxham, who was an all-American runner-up at the University of Washington, to join them a few months ago.
