White House press secretary Jen Psaki, who canceled President Joe Biden’s international trip shortly before he left, tested positive for coronavirus after members of her household, she said in a statement on Sunday.
Psaki said she last saw Biden masked outside on Tuesday before the president left for the Group of 20 summit in Rome. Psaki said she announced the positive test result “from an abundance of transparency,” adding that she had mild symptoms and was working remotely.
The White House announced on Thursday that Psaki would no longer accompany Biden on his trip abroad “at least for the first few days,” citing a family emergency. Instead, White House Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre traveled with the President.
“On Wednesday, in coordination with White House management and the medical team, I made the decision not to travel abroad with the President due to a family emergency in which members of my household tested positive for COVID-19.” said Psaki in Sunday’s statement. “Since then I have quarantined myself on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and tested negative (via PCR) for COVID. However, today I tested positive for COVID. “
She continued, “I will plan to personally return to work, which was done out of great caution, after completing the ten-day quarantine after a rapid negative test, which is an additional requirement by the White House beyond CDC guidelines.”
Biden received his Covid-19 booster last month and is next to travel to the United Nations Climate Change Summit in Glasgow, Scotland on Monday. Vice President Kamala Harris got her booster on Saturday.
