PARIS (AP) – Around 3,600 amateur runners competed on Sunday in a special race in the heart of Paris against the Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge, while the city is preparing to host the Olympic Games in 2024.

The runners raced along the historic, cobblestone Champs-Elysees, with Kipchoge starting last.

Everyone he was unable to catch up in the 5-kilometer race – more than 1,000 people – gained access to an Olympic marathon in 2024, according to the organizers. The event was organized to mark the 1,000 days leading up to the Paris Games.

Kipchoge won gold in the Olympic marathon in August and 2016 and is the world record holder in the marathon with a time of 2 hours, 1 minute and 39 seconds.
