One crew member said he warned the producers of the film “Rust” that Dave Halls, the first assistant director, had been carefree about safety on set on a previous production.

Halls has admitted to investigators that he failed to properly check a gun before handing it over to Alec Baldwin on the set of Rust on October 21 at vielfalt.com.

Production companies credited to ‘Rust’ include Thomasville Pictures, directed by Ryan Smith and Allen Cheney, and Short Porch Pictures, directed by Nathan Klingher and Ryan Winterstern, among others.

The same two companies also produced One Way, another independent film that was shot in Georgia in February. Halls also served as the first assistant director on this project.

During filming, the crew member said he saw an unsafe situation where cars were driven in the open field by locals who were not stunted drivers. The crew member, who refused to be identified, said he had specifically warned producers that Halls was putting the crew in danger.

“This man is a burden,” recalled the crew member.

“He’s going to kill someone one day and you will be responsible for it.”

A second crew member from ‘One Way’ also said there were security issues with hangars and vehicles on set. That person said there was a scene with a “car hit” that was under-crewed and that background actors were driving cars rather than stunt drivers.

“You put me in danger,” the second crew member told Variety.

“You get the down-to-earth people.”

A third crew member confirmed to have heard from a fourth person on the set of security problems in hangars and vehicles.

This crew member also said he saw Halls lose his temper on the set.

Jay Graves, the set dresser on “One Way,” also told Variety that he nearly got cut off from a car twice during production.

He said they were filming on one street, but the street was not completely closed so that cross traffic could drive through the set between takes.

“It was the least safe set I’ve ever worked on in my life,” said Graves.

Another crew member, Jared Tyree, was on set for a day.

He told Variety that production was shut down for about 30 minutes after two vehicles nearly collided.

A producer spokesperson provided a quote from Molly Mayeux, the line producer on ‘One Way’, who denied there were any security issues on the set.

“I can confirm with 100 percent certainty that ‘One Way’ was extremely safety conscious and that all safety protocols were followed during the shoot,” said Mayeux.

“I’m sick of these ‘sources’ trying to capitalize on such a terrible accident.”

Mayeux also denied that the crew member issued the warning that Halls was a “liability,” the spokesman said.

Halls was also fired from another project: Freedom’s Path in 2019, after an incident involving a gun that unexpectedly exploded, according to the producers of that film.

Thomasville Pictures was also involved in ‘Bandit’, an independent film starring Mel Gibson, although they were not the main producers.

Two crew members on this project said that some of the workers were not paid in full for the time they worked. Two ‘One Way’ crew members also said the film had problems with late paychecks.

Heather McReynolds, the second assistant director on ‘Bandit’, said the crew members were staying in discounted hotel accommodations and not paying the full daily allowance.

However, not everyone has had a bad experience with the company. JM Stelly, who worked as a digital imaging technician on One Way, said Smith and Cheney treated him well.

He also said he had been friends with Halls for years and always knew he was conscientious about safety. He said the basic question about a Rust is how did a live round on set.

“I don’t think this will fall on Allen and I don’t think this will fall on Ryan,” said Stelly.

“And people should fire Dave. He admitted what he did. That is the right thing. “
