Ten months into 2021, less than half of BC residents are in favor of Vancouver bidding to host the next Olympics, a new poll found.

In a survey by Research Co., only 43 percent of British Columbians said they support bids for the 2030 Winter Olympics – a decrease of 17 points from a similar survey conducted in January last year.

Interest in the 2036 Summer Olympics declined even further, dropping from 62 percent in January 2020 to 38 percent, according to the Vancouver-based polling firm.

“The events of the past few years, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent experience with Tokyo as the host city, appear to have made British Columbians more skeptical about a new Olympic bid,” said Mario Canseco, President of Research Co., in a press release.

“Our survey shows that 17% of the province’s residents went from supporters to opponents when asked if Vancouver should host the Winter Olympics again.”

The survey of 800 adult BC residents was conducted between October 18 and 20.

In January 2020 – before COVID-19 was declared a pandemic – 67 percent of BC residents between 18 and 34 and 59 percent between 35 and 54 were in favor of a new bid for the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

More than half of British Columbians – 53 percent – now believe it is impossible for the city to host the 2030 Winter Olympics without public or government funding, the statement said.

The province is also divided over whether the International Olympic Committee made a mistake in releasing the Tokyo Summer Games this year.

45 percent of those questioned agreed with their decision, 43 percent did not agree.
