director Joel Souza made a statement while recovering from injuries sustained in an on-set accident that resulted in the death of his colleague the cameraman Halyna Hutchins.
The 42-year-old cameraman died after being shot by a prop gun that was a performer and co-producer Alec Baldwin was fired on the set of Souza’s film Rust on a ranch in New Mexico on Thursday, October 21. Souza, 48, was treated in a hospital for his injuries before he was released. The police are investigating the incident.
“I’m saddened by the loss of my friend and colleague Halyna,” the director said in a statement to NBC News on Saturday, October 22nd, in his first public comment on the filming. “She was friendly, lively, incredibly talented, fought for every inch and always pushed me to get better. My thoughts are with her family at this most difficult time.”
He continued, “I am humble and grateful for the affection we have received from our filmmaking community, the people of Santa Fe, and the hundreds of strangers who have come forward … it will certainly help my recovery. “
