The Black Ferns Sevens were named the best female team at the Tokyo Olympics.
The team received the prestigious Tokyo 2020 Award virtually at the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) awards held in Crete.
Team captain and New Zealand team Te Pou Hapai Wahine Sarah Hirini says the team is thrilled to accept the award.
“It’s a great honor for us. It was unreal to win this gold medal and this award makes this campaign even more special,” said Hirini.
“We are really proud of our achievements and successes over the past five years and are excited about what’s next.”
Kereyn Smith, CEO of the New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC), congratulated the team.
“New Zealand was inspired by the efforts of our women’s seven team in Tokyo,” said Smith. “This team put years of hard work into an amazing Olympic campaign and they really deserve this award.”
The women’s team of seven won their first Olympic gold medal at the Games.
In the final of the Games in Tokyo, the New Zealanders defeated France with a sovereign performance 26:12 and thus secured their place as Olympic champions.
The win crowned a huge campaign that began after losing the gold medal game against Australia in Rio 2016. In the years that followed, the team built an amazing run for every available title, including winning four consecutive World Series titles, the Commonwealth Games and the World Championships, before taking the coveted Olympic gold.
