The 68-year-old actor posted a statement on Twitter on a day that Hollywood’s film workers’ union claimed the prop gun Alec Baldwin used, which caused the accidental death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, had a “live singles round” on the set of “Rust”, a “Western” he produced.

The film’s director, Joel Souza, who was also injured in the incident, survived after receiving treatment for his injuries, but the 42-year-old cameraman was not so lucky.

“There are no words to express my shock and grief over the tragic accident in which Halyna Hutchins, a woman, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours, lost her life,” Baldwin tweeted on Variety.

On Thursday evening, the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office confirmed that on the set of “Rust,” an independent film in which Baldwin starred and produced, Baldwin had fired the prop gun that resulted in Hutchins’ death and Souza’s injuries.

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) claimed in a statement released Friday that the prop gun had a “live single round”. According to “Variety”, a prop gun is made of rubber or resin and would not be able to fire a live round. A weapon that can fire spaces would be referred to as a “bladed firearm”.

The union’s indictment came on a day when sadness and anger erupted on social media from those who knew and worked with Hutchins. The feelings of the late cameraman’s colleagues were articulated by director Adam Egypt Mortimer, who worked with Hutchins on the 2020 independent superhero mystery thriller film “Archenemy”.

Mortimer tweeted, “I’m so sad to have lost Halyna. And so angry that this could happen on a set. She was a brilliant talent who is absolutely committed to art and film. “

Joe Manganiello, who starred in Archenemy, wrote, “An incredible talent and a great person. I can’t believe this could happen in this day and age … Prop gun shots could kill a crew member? What a terrible one Tragedy. My heart is with your family. “

At the time of the tragedy, “Rust” was being filmed at Bonanza Creek Ranch, a popular film location south of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
