The funeral of the Kenyan athlete Agnes Tirop took place on Saturday. It’s the same day she would have turned 26.

Tirop, who represented Kenya in the Olympic Games in long distance running, was found stabbed to death in her home 10 days ago.

Her death highlighted incidents of violence against women in the East African country.

Hundreds of mourners gathered, including some of the country’s top athletes.

“For us Kenyans, we’ve lost a hero,” said the women’s 5,000m world champion, Hellen Obiri. “I told her that she should defend my titles and represent our country in 2022,” said Obiri tearfully, who was also the mentor of the athlete who was killed.

Many wore distinctive red athletics shirts in honor of the fallen Kenyan athlete.

The victim’s husband arrested

Kenyan police arrested the athlete’s husband last week on suspicion of murder.

According to local media, a Kenyan court on Monday gave police permission to detain Ibrahim Rotich for a period of 20 days to allow further investigation. The suspect’s mental health would also be assessed during this time.

Tirop and Rotich had shared a house in Iten in the Rift Valley.

The double world championship bronze medalist was one of Kenya’s brightest up-and-coming stars after finishing fourth at the Olympic Games in Tokyo over 5,000 meters.

In her latest achievement, Tirop broke the world record for women in the 10 km run in a time of 30:01 in Germany just last month
