Choice, a leading sports betting analysis company in the United States, has commissioned a report that examines the habits of basketball bettors in the country. The company was able to identify patterns that determine what motivates basketball fans to pursue sports betting.

The poll called The Inaugural Pickwise annual sports betting survey was conducted by Beacon Research and comprised 1,500 self-appointed US sports bettors based in states that regulate the sports gambling industry.

Pickwise reveals basketball betting as a competitive lot

Based on Pickwise’s findings, basketball bettors still view betting as a recreational activity, but also take a more engaging approach and feel more preoccupied with the basketball action. Still, the fans are highly motivated by the win and that’s something they want to achieve with every bet they place.

In fact, Pickwise has found that 73% of all bettors who place bets on college or professional basketball games likely cite profit as one of the top reasons for participating in the hobby. Another 43% said winning money was the biggest incentive to keep playing.

For those who don’t bet on basketball, the percentages dropped a little to 67% and 36%, respectively. About 77% of all basketball respondents appear to bet weekly, compared to 56% of non-basketball bettors.

The survey also found that football is still the leader in terms of the sport with the most bets, with 73% of respondents placing a bet on the NFL, compared to just 62% of those who bet on basketball.

Pickwise’s analysis also took into account how much each group spent preparing a bet, and 33% of basketball fans took an average of longer, around two hours a week, to research and analyze the available data compared to regular sports betting fans . Only 26% of non-basketball bettors have researched data before placing a bet.

Basketball bettors are also more likely to have multiple sports betting accounts in order to make the most of the available fluctuations in odds. Demographically, basketball bettors are also younger, more diverse, and strangely enough, they tend to be single.
