The Biden government has stopped targeting immigrants with workplace searches and has shifted the focus of enforcement to employers.
Biden ends Trump’s campaign against terrorism in the workplace
According to the Ministry of Homeland Security:
Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas directed U.S. Immigration and Customs Services (ICE), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to take action to ensure a fair Promote the labor market by supporting more effective enforcement of wage protection, occupational safety, labor rights and other labor laws and standards.
“The Department of Homeland Security plays a vital role in ensuring that our nation’s workplaces comply with our laws,” said Minister Mayorkas. “We will not tolerate unscrupulous employers who exploit unauthorized workers, engage in illegal activities, or impose unsafe working conditions. Employers involved in illegal activity are at the center of our enforcement resources. By putting policies in place that focus on the most unscrupulous employers, we will protect workers as well as legitimate American companies. “
In accordance with a memorandum issued by Secretary Mayorkas on October 12, ICE, CBP, and USCIS will develop and update guidelines to enhance the department’s effectiveness in supporting the enforcement of employment and labor standards. Agencies also need to develop strategies to prioritize workplace enforcement against unscrupulous employers and to facilitate the involvement of vulnerable workers in labor investigations by exercising the prosecution’s discretion.
The memorandum also puts an end to mass enforcement on the construction site. Under the previous administration, these resource-intensive operations resulted in the simultaneous arrest of hundreds of workers and were used by exploitative employers as a tool to suppress and retaliate against worker enforcement.
The raids backfired and helped illegal employers
The raids on the workplace were a terrible Trump policy that helped illegal employers exploit immigrants. The message from the Biden government is that rounding up and deporting immigrants who would otherwise not break the law will not be a priority.
The raids were time consuming, expensive, and a waste of DHS resources on nothing more than a terror campaign aimed at scaring workers and appealing to Trump’s grassroots.
The money wasted in these raids was to be used to top up the processing of immigration cases. Trump has gutted the entire immigration system that the Biden administration is rebuilding.
Immigration raids only scare immigrants and help illegal employers. It’s bad policy, and Biden is doing the right thing by putting an end to it.
