Calls for an increase in the independent DOJ task force to investigate Trump

A group of government watchdogs call on Attorney General Merrick Garland to set up an independent DOJ task force to investigate Trump.

The non-partisan Hold Trump Accountable Campaign said in a statement to PoliticusUSA:

An extensive report by the Senate Judiciary Committee has been released detailing how former President Donald Trump, his staff and a Justice Department attorney attempted to overturn the results of the 2020 election. According to the findings of the committee’s report, Trump put pressure on the DOJ nine times to overturn the 2020 election results; its chief of staff, former MP Mark Meadows, violated the guidelines by pressuring Justice Department attorneys to investigate false allegations of electoral fraud; and Trump even considered replacing the acting attorney general with a Justice Department attorney who supported these fraudulent claims.

Months prior to the release of this report, the Americans called on Attorney General Merrick Garland to set up an independent task force to investigate the former president, members of his government or campaign, his company, or other employees for potential criminal or civil violations of federal law they may have committed. Over two hundred thousand people have joined the coalition’s call to investigate Trump.

The details of this report make it clear that there is more than sufficient basis to investigate clear abuse of power and potential federal crimes committed by Donald Trump and his staff.

Over 200,000 Americans have signed a petition calling on the DOJ to set up an independent task force to investigate Trump.

“Restoring the rule of law begins with restoring the Department of Justice, and none of this can be achieved without holding Donald Trump and his accomplices accountable. To restore the rationale that we are a nation of law and that no one – not even the President – is above the law, it is imperative that Attorney General Merrick Garland set up a task force to investigate and, where the evidence warrants, prosecute is pursued. those who violated their oath of office and the laws of our country, ”said Ben Clements, Chairman of the Board and Senior Legal Advisor of Free speech for people.

Evidence that Donald Trump and his staff committed multiple crimes over the past four years continues to mount. The Trump years are both an unprecedented threat to democracy and an unprecedented crisis.

These are not normal times so the DOJ must face the situation and do its job of upholding the law.
