The best New World settings for PC performance

With a peak number of concurrent players showing no signs of slowing down, it’s safe to say that the New World of Amazon is making waves. But before you brave the long queues or even start scouring the server list, it’s a good idea to tweak New World’s settings so you can get every last picture of your gaming PC when you finally step into Aeternum.

On the surface, the New World system requirements don’t ask for much. In fact, Amazon recommends a ten year old Intel gaming CPU or a first generation AMD Ryzen processor accompanied by a seven year old graphics card to scratch your 60fps itch on HD. While this sounds like a low barrier to entry, this is an MMO and you need to prepare for how busy the settlements can be at times – especially since there is no shortage of people knocking on the door to get in and the worlds are constantly brimming with Players.

Since you don’t have Nvidia DLSS or AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution to help with the overhead, you’ll have to turn to the myriad of options available to you if you want to avoid major drops in a decent resolution.

Here’s a reminder of what your rig needs to pack to get started:

System requirements for the new world

New World is a surprisingly slim game for an MMO with only 50 GB. Note that the game will only work on Windows 10 64-bit and as with most new versions, it is highly recommended that you install New World on an SSD for the best performance, even if it works on a mechanical hard drive.

New world presets

New World has four presets available from the Video Quality drop-down menu: Very high, High, middle, and Low.

In other games, choosing a preset would typically result in a mix of averages, highs, and lows across the myriad of settings. For better or for worse, Amazon simplifies the process by keeping all settings consistent. If you choose High, all of your settings will follow suit and it’s up to you to tinker with custom settings if you want to tweak things.

It goes without saying that Very High is the most demanding and is only intended for heavier rigs that are up to the task. Low, on the other hand, dramatically improves your frame rate by up to 50% in comparison – just be prepared for the compromise as it removes the glitz of New World and introduces strange lighting flaws. Needless to say, we’ve avoided low settings whenever possible to make sure this doesn’t happen.

Best New World Settings

If you want to chat in-game, the first thing you should do is check your microphone settings on the Communication tab. The game sets your preferred devices based on your Windows settings, but since even the best webcams tend to assume the default settings from time to time, it doesn’t hurt to make sure everything is as it should be. However, you will have to wait until you have entered Aeternum with a friend to adjust sensitivities and volumes. On the other hand, if voice chat isn’t your thing, you can turn it off completely.

The audio settings are similarly extensive, and you won’t get a good feel for them cinemamovies, Sound effects, Environmental effects, singing, Synchro-recording, music, and Ambient music until you get right into the game. You can push that Master volume to protect your eardrum in the meantime, and set your preferred output configuration depending on whether you’re using the best gaming headset or computer speakers.

Then go to the Visuals tab and look at it New world settings:

  • Effect details: very high
  • Lighting details: high
  • Property details: very high
  • post processing: high
  • Shadow details: Middle
  • Terrain effects: Middle
  • Texture effects: high
  • Water effects: very high
  • V-sync: the end
  • Player nameplate: fifteen
  • Dynamic resolution scaling: the end
  • Analytics reports: off (to be found in the settings)

Name badges of the players have a surprisingly large impact on the frame rate, but we can’t say that Amazon doesn’t warn us in the description. These give you details on who’s around you and what factions they belong to, but there’s a reason it’s set to 15 by default. Spinning up to 100 players costs anywhere from five to ten fps, but the worst side effect is actually the inconsistency of the frame falling off as you enter more densely populated areas. While there isn’t all that much to gain by going under 15, reducing it further can help you enjoy the scenery without seeing so much clutter on the screen.

Terrain details is the next setting you need to adjust if you want to increase the fps. This affects the surrounding foliage, which you’ll spend a lot of time in, but turning it down doesn’t detract from the beauty of the game. It does return a few frames, however, so it’s worth the trade.

Texture details Reaches far and wide, adding depth to almost everything you see. But what the setting has, it takes away from the frame rate. We don’t think it’s not worth turning down too much given the severe loss of quality, but you can get even more out of it by turning it down to Medium – just be prepared to lose some of the magic in the process.

Shadow details dealing with the seedy parts of the game and as always can drag the performance down a bit. Going too low makes New World look a little less new, so Medium is your best bet here.

Dynamic resolution scaling actually goes the furthest to improve your frame rate, but it’s not the golden goose you were hoping for. It uses guesswork to automatically reduce your pixel count in certain areas and proactively prevent image loss in advance. Unfortunately, it degrades image quality so much that we can’t recommend it unless it’s absolutely necessary to get a good frame rate.

It’s surprising to see Effect details, Lighting details, and Water details don’t have as much of an impact on New World as they do in other games, but you could cut them all down if you want to win a few more frames. We think keeping the blooming landscape in all its glory is worth it if your setup can handle it.

As usual, parking V-sync helps keep New World smooth. Keeping the screen intact for those of you with no alternatives is a must, but there’s no reason to use it if you have a gaming monitor that supports Nvidia G-Sync or AMD FreeSync.

Adding a Frame cap can help if New World stutters or loses frames regularly as it goes a long way in maintaining consistency. Since it’s not a highly competitive game, you don’t necessarily need triple-digit fps, but funnily enough, the limiter is capped at just 30fps and 60fps, which many of you don’t like with a higher refresh rating. However, your PC will thank you for keeping the background FPS limit as it will help keep the overhead down when you exit Alt-Tab from the game.

Lastly, I want to draw your attention to the gameplay tab, where they are much vilified The screen is shaky Setting lies. It definitely won’t help you improve your frame rate, but the option to disable it is there if you don’t like it the way we usually do.

Settings for the accessibility of the new world

New World has an accessibility section so more people can play the new MMO. These settings include eight different color blindness filters (protanopia, protanomaly, deuteranopia, deuteranomaly, tritanopia, tritanomaly, achromatopsia, achromatomaly), text-to-speech and speech-to-text. You can also adjust the size of the text in New World, but with only two options to choose from, it could use a little improvement if Amazon intends to serve them all.

There are other settings elsewhere that could improve your experience as well. The Communication tab lets you tinker with chat text by adjusting the font size, fade-in delay, opacity of the chat window background, and even set a language filter to get rid of bad words – although it’s unclear where exactly Amazon draws a line here in the sand. Those of you who are hard of hearing can also use the audio tab to amplify quieter sounds if you have the feeling that you are missing out on Aeternum’s acoustics.

Amazon Games is addressing the exceptionally long wait with server transfers next week, but that’s not the only thing tarnishing New World’s launch. Similar to the issues that plagued the beta, reports of gaming GPUs breaking in New World are re-appearing as many people go to Reddit to complain that the game broke their hardware.

So far, mainly Nvidia owners have been posting about the problem, but not only RTX 3090s are giving up like other desktop and mobile graphics cards of the 3000 series. We reached out to Amazon and GPU manufacturers in the hopes that they would fix the fatal flaw, but in the meantime, caution should be exercised if you’ve got your hands on an upgrade due to the ongoing graphics card shortage.

Fortunately, if you’re stuck and want to know where the New World’s best iron ore locations are, or you’re curious about how to get fish oil, the Alt-Tabs MMO is pretty friendly. It only has full screen and window options, but the former is borderless by default, so your cursor can wander freely without minimizing the game. Even better, with the FPS limit turned on, the background game doesn’t eat up a lot of your rig’s resources while you read.
