CMA Awards ban Morgan Wallen despite being nominated for “Album of the Year” (Photo: Facebook)
The CMA Awards will not allow Morgan Wallen to appear on the show, perform or accept an award, including failing to walk the red carpet, despite his nomination, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.
Billboard.com has upheld the ban with the Country Music Association.
“This is the first time in the history of the CMA, as far as I know, anyone has ever been disqualified for behavior,” Sarah Trahern, CEO of CMA, told the LA Times. “It is not right to honor him as an individual this year, and he will not be allowed on the red carpet, on our stage, or celebrated in any way.”
The question that remains is who should accept if Morgan Wallen wins or if his team would show solidarity with his absent leader. His co-nominees for this year’s bestselling project across all genres are producers Dave Cohen, Matt Dragstrem, Jacob Durrett, Charlie Handsome and Joey Moi. Moi is also nominated as a mix engineer for the project.
Morgan Wallen gained considerable fame through several incidents. He was arrested for misconduct after being kicked out of Kid Rock’s steakhouse in Nashville in May 2020 and suspended from a scheduled Saturday Night Live performance in October after video evidence surfaced showing Wallen’s failure to comply COVID-19 logs kept by NBC.
In February 2021, a video was posted showing Wallen uttering a racial slur. The incident resulted in a suspension from his record label and the removal of his music from several major radio stations in the United States. Despite the controversy, Wallen’s music saw a surge in commercial success after the incident.
Wallen is an American country singer and songwriter. Born in Tennessee, he participated in the sixth season of “The Voice”, originally as a member of Usher’s team, but later as a member of Adam Levine’s team. After dropping out of the playoffs that season, he signed with Panacea Records and released his debut EP Stand Alone in 2015.
A representative from Wallen and Big Loud declined to comment to Billboard.com.
