The developers of Hearts of Iron IV will shake up the outdated meta of the strategy game



From competitive multiplayer games to most niche strategy games, the concept of a “meta” – a series of optimal decisions that produce the desired outcome – is not new. Sometimes a game’s meta is changed liberally, but in great strategy games like Hearts of Iron IV, you can’t just come up with a quick fix.

But where there’s a will, there’s a way, and the developers are finally coming to break the old order and usher in a new era of warfare in Hearts of Iron IV. This is something the dev team has been talking about since May when they first detailed some changes for the fight, but former Game Director Dan Lind came back for this week’s dev diary to outline some additional changes that would make the The status quo will go far beyond the open.

The WW2 game has had a rather stale combat meta for a few years now – known as the 40/20 meta – which specifically refers to how to design combat divisions in terms of their combat breadth, a key statistic when it comes to large scale formations in combat . In addition to the changes to province width mentioned earlier in the year, developers are also changing the way combat divisions choose their targets in combat and how damage is distributed.

The final combat change mentioned this week is more of a quality of life change in terms of reinforcement during combat. It is no longer decided by the order in which a division enters a fight, but there is a random chance with available modifiers that can affect that chance. The change aims to put an end to some of the movement gym players so that their divisions appear in the correct order.

Elsewhere the diary speaks of some additional changes to be made in the revision of the Soviet Union. In a past diary, the developers talked about the content of the focus tree for the Exiles branch. Since then, they have taken in some feedback and suggestions from the community, adding more options to the trees and narrowing down certain geopolitical choices that rely on which ideology the player chooses.

At the time of writing, the upcoming Hearts of Iron IV DLC No Step Back has no release date, but it should be out on Steam and the Paradox Store before the end of the year.
