Which New World faction should you choose?

Wondering which faction to pick in New World? The New World servers are finally live and we expect an influx of players to arrive on the shores of the open world MMO. If you’re unfamiliar with Amazon’s new game, there are a few things that set it apart from your usual MMO game. There are no classes, you can only have one character per server, and the player base is divided into three factions: Marauders, Syndicate, and Covenant.

The faction you choose will have a huge impact on your gameplay. Once you’ve chosen one, you won’t be able to join any other faction for the next 120 days, and you can only join companies – essentially guilds – that match your faction. When you sign up for New World PvP, you can be attacked by players from rival factions while you are outside of safe areas.

You also represent your faction in Wars, 50v50 PvP battles, by controlling a settlement. The winner is responsible for the development and tax rates of the settlement and also receives buffs in the area. So there are many reasons to swear allegiance – but how do you choose your New World faction?

How to choose a faction in New World

To choose a faction, you’ll need to reach level 10 and complete a series of beginner quests. After you’ve spoken to each of the three faction representatives in your local settlement and completed their introductory quests, it’s up to you to decide which one to join.

If you play with a group or know players who have already voted a faction, we strongly recommend that you choose the same – unless, of course, you want to fight them. You can only join companies that belong to your faction. If you don’t know another player and want to be part of a community, keep an eye out for companies that recruit members.

Understandably, players probably want to be part of the largest or second largest faction on the server – if there’s one faction that is much smaller than the others, they can end up with the scrap while the other two prevail. Apparently there are “underdog mechanics” that prevent a faction from falling too far behind, but it is not yet clear what these are.

It is difficult to predict which faction will dominate on the server you choose, so we recommend that you choose the faction that you prefer the lore and feel to.

Can you change your New World faction?

Yes, you can change your faction in New World. You can’t switch to the faction that holds the most territory, however, and you can only switch every 120 days – still a significant commitment, but a little less daunting than being locked up forever.

New World factions

The factions in the New World are:

Marauders are an “unscrupulous military power” who want to use their strength to gain freedom. If you want to flex your muscles and strengthen your way up, Marauders is the place for you.

The Bund is a “fanatical order” with the mission to cleanse the land of impurities and heretics and to restore justice. If you enjoy being holier than you and beating sinners, Covenant is the team to join.

The Syndicate is a “secret organization of limitless cunning and intellect” – if you prefer to sneak behind the back of all secrets, you will be in good company with them.

You are now ready to make the big decision – good luck on your adventures in Aeternum. If you need further guidance, we have a guide to the best New World weapons – and if you’re planning on teaming up, here’s how to play with friends in New World.
