Android Authority

  • Information about hardware and software features of the Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 6 Pro cameras has just been leaked.
  • There seems to be good news and bad news regarding their photography and videography skills.
  • Since it is a leak there is no way to determine if the information for the actual release of the phones lasted.

For a few weeks now, XDA-Developers has been communicating with an anonymous source who claims to have a working Google Pixel 6 Pro. By sharing information with XDA, this source has given us a glimpse of what we can expect from Google’s next flagships.

Today the source gave XDA a tour of the Google Pixel 6 Pro camera. By examining the code from the phone as well as asking questions to the anonymous source, XDA has gathered some interesting tidbits about the imaging system.

Keep in mind that this is unaudited leaked information. While XDA is a very trustworthy source of such information, that doesn’t mean it’s set in stone. Treat everything you read here with a grain of salt.

Camera hardware for Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro

As a refresher, what you can expect from the two phones in terms of hardware:

Google Pixel 6

  • 50MP Samsung GN1 main cable
  • 12MP Sony IMX386 ultra wide angle
  • 8MP selfie camera

Google Pixel 6 Pro

  • 50MP Samsung GN1 main cable
  • 12MP Sony IMX386 ultra wide angle
  • 48MP Sony IMX586 telephoto lens with 4x zoom
  • 12MP Sony IMX663 selfie camera

Note that the phones have different selfie camera hardware. According to XDA, the Pixel 6 Pro code suggests that it has an ultra-wide-angle lens on the front, while the Vanilla Pixel 6 has a standard wide-angle lens. This should allow the Google Pixel 6 Pro camera to take wider shots and add more background to your selfies.

Features and Limitations

Here’s a quick recap of what XDA found. For full explanations of how these things were found out, be sure to read the entire original post.

  • Video recording quality: It looks like the Pixel 6 series main camera lens can capture 4K video at 60 fps. However, the wide-angle and telephoto lenses get stuck at 4K at 30fps.
  • Seamless recording: Setting all three lenses to 4K30 recording allows you to seamlessly switch from one lens to the other without stopping recording.
  • Video zoom: The maximum zoom level for recordings with 4K60 or 1080p60 is supposedly 7x. Recording with 4K30 or 1080p30 supposedly allows zoom levels of up to 20x.
  • Manual white balance: You may have more control over the white balance of your shots. However, it is unclear whether this is a developer role for the Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 6 Pro cameras.
  • “Magic Eraser”: It is possible that Google has revived its plans to incorporate object deletion into its products. It said it would do this in Google Photos, but it never happened. Maybe this will be exclusive to Pixel 6?
  • Facial blurring: In fact, Google has already confirmed this, but the Pixel 6 Pro code backs up the announcement. As the name suggests, this would help clean up blurry faces in your shots.
  • Bluetooth microphone: It is possible that you can use a Bluetooth connected microphone while recording videos. However, the evidence for this is currently fragile.

There are a few other features hinted at in the full roundup, but either the evidence for this is shaky or XDA isn’t sure what it will be for.
