Milley also held a secret meeting on Jan. 8, according to Woodward and Costa’s book, aimed at curtailing Trump’s ability to take military action in the dwindling days of his presidency. The January 6th committee had already requested documents from the Pentagon covering the period in question, but their request became more relevant given the new coverage of Milley’s actions.

The panel is in the process of sourcing and reviewing documents from across the federal government related to the Jan. 6 attack, but it is unclear whether Trump will attempt to shield one of his old White House documents from review.

Cheney and Thompson’s comment also came as Trump renewed his public efforts to wash away the January 6 events, issued a statement calling the Capitol Violation defendants “persecuted” and reiterating false claims about the 2020 election results .

In a separate interview with the Federalist, Trump called on supporters to avoid a September 18 rally in the Capitol in support of the January 6 defendants, calling it a “statement.”
