Valheim’s new nutritional system that came out yesterday has been rebalanced

Valheim’s developers warned players earlier this week that the Hearth and Home update wasn’t going to be a big infusion of new content, but rather a series of changes to the more domestic side of the Viking game. One of the biggest changes in the patch is a new food system that Iron Gate restricted just a day after the patch was released.

The new food system is designed to give players more interesting choices when figuring out what to eat. Now foods will either replenish health or increase your stamina, or offer a mix of both. However, a new hotfix released today pretty much makes up for it all – now Hitpoint foods add a little more stamina, and stamina-boosting foods will add some HP.

The hotfix also adjusts bows so that their use consumes a little less stamina, which will be a relief for those of us who like to do damage from a distance. You will find that the Fulings’ hitpoints have been weakened and they are now a little easier to tumble. The developers have also fixed an issue that prevented tar pits from appearing on dedicated server worlds.

The food update is the big one, however, as it also feeds – no pun intended – into how Valheim’s new blocking and staggering system works. The idea was that players who want to act as DPS characters can recharge themselves with stamina-boosting foods, while players who prefer a tanker approach can have plenty of HP regenerants on hand.

That will still be the case after the hotfix, but it seems like you don’t have to commit quite as much to one style or the other on a particular expedition.

Valheim is still in Early Access, so there will be a lot more to come. You can check out our Valheim Roadmap Story to learn more, or take a look at our guide to the best Valheim mods if you’d like to tinker with it yourself.
