Donald Trump’s support can mean a lot to candidates in certain states. In others, however, the former president’s support is more trouble than it’s worth and could potentially hold up a campaign.

It’s unclear what Trump’s support could be worth in the state of Virginia. Once a Republican stronghold, it has turned increasingly blue, with Joe Biden defeating Trump by just over 10%.

Of course, the former president thinks he is an asset, not a burden. So on Monday he threw his support behind Republican gubernatorial candidate Glenn Youngkin. Former VA. Governor and current Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe dared to come to Trump and publicly promote Youngkin.

Trump wrote today: “Four years ago, a man named Ed Gillespie ran for governor of Virginia with no interest in MAGA or the America First movement. The Trump base in Virginia is very big, they got his game, and they didn’t stand up for Gillespie … Now a great candidate, Glenn Youngkin, is running against the political hacker and the unpopular former Governor Terry McAuliffe. Glenn has a very good chance of winning. “

An amused McAuliffe replied, “Donald Trump, a failed and unpopular one-term president simply cannot accept that the people of Virginia rejected him TWICE. So he’s back to his 2020 election lies. Donald, are you brave enough to come to Virginia to promote Glenn? The third time is a charm. “

McAuliffe was a popular Virginia governor and is the clear favorite in the race. It is very unlikely that Trump’s backing will help Younkin overtake him.
