Soulja Boy broke a few records in his day, but he seems obsessed with breaking into another market: video games. If you remember, in 2018 he attempted to sell renamed Chinese game consoles with unlicensed ROMs before attempting to release a Game Boy clone. Following apparent legal action by Nintendo, Soulja Boy was forced to remove the entries from the internet, admitting that he “… had to go, I had no choice.”

However, it seems that you can’t keep a good rapper under control. Soulja Boy was back earlier this year, teasing another game console that looked a lot like an Xbox Series S. Soulja Boy was clearly optimistic about the project. “Build a new console from scratch, completely new design. All new games. All new offerings. Let’s make history.” However, it appears that he’s already moved on to his next project, another handheld. And guess what? He’s basically just added his endorsement of a cheap handheld console based on older hardware.

According to Retro Dodo, the TRDR Pocket currently offered by Soulja Boy is actually based on the Retroid Pocket, which in turn was cloned as the Powkiddy A19. It focuses on emulation (like the other systems Soulja Boy advertised) but runs on Android, so in theory you can install Android apps like Netflix on it – something the Nintendo Switch can’t right now. It is positioned as a handheld that you can also use social media apps and enjoy your games. It even has call of Duty (at least the smartphone version) which you can see in the video above.

The catch? This product (or a very similar one) can usually be picked up for under $ 100, but the TRDR Pocket sells for double that. Retro Dodo contacted Go Games, the Spanish company behind the TRDR Pocket, and they admitted they didn’t know Soulja Boy’s rather patchy history of gaming hardware. However, as of yesterday, the rapper is still promoting the device on his social media accounts.

As you’d expect, many in the gaming community have reacted negatively to this device, but that doesn’t seem to dissuade Soulja Boy, who is already teasing a successor. Unless this is a PS-Vita-style copy from China that is already available under a different name (and for less money), we’re going to be consuming tons of hats.
