The Wall Street indices opened higher, putting stocks on a stabilization course after the Omicron variant sold off last week. We observe the following in trading on Monday:

  • Vaccine manufacturers said they would assemble teams of scientists to evaluate the new Omicron strain of Covid. Moderna, Pfizer and Novavax stocks gained.
  • New Covid restrictions are shaking the travel industry again, despite airlines saying the busy Thanksgiving weekend generally went smoothly. Southwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines all rose in morning trade.
  • Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruise lines also bounced back from some of their big declines over the past week.
  • Crude oil prices also made up for some of last week’s decline, and energy producers rose. Occidental Petroleum, Devon Energy and Diamondback Energy rose, as did the oil services company Halliburton.
