Trump says Kyle Rittenhouse visited him after the trial in Mar-a-Lago

Donald Trump

“I just left Mar-a-Lago a while ago and that should never have happened to him. That was prosecutorial wrongdoing, and it’s happening all over the United States with Democrats. “

Trump’s hour-long interview followed Tucker Carlson’s Monday night interview with Rittenhouse after the trial.

A Wisconsin jury acquitted Rittenhouse last week. In August 2020, the teenager was armed with an AR-style semi-automatic rifle and argued that he had acted in self-defense and had been in town to protect property and provide medical assistance during the Kenosha riots. The protests were sparked by the shooting of Jacob Blake, a black man, by a white police officer.

During his trial, Rittenhouse said he fired to protect himself after being attacked and feared for his life.

The case was a political lightning rod amid the 2020 presidential race and months of protests against police brutality and racial injustice following the murder of George Floyd by then-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.

The politicization of the Rittenhouse process has continued with the right wing glorifying the 18-year-old. Legal protection funds have been set up in his name, and memes have depicted Rittenhouse as a hero on social media. Republican Congressmen have announced they will offer Rittenhouse an internship, and Trump raised money for his acquittal. The left has portrayed him as a symbol of armed vigilance that runs amok.

Rittenhouse said repeatedly during Monday’s interview that his trial was not about politics.

“Whatever your opinion or where you stand, this wasn’t a political case, it shouldn’t have been a political case, a political case was made,” he told Carlson. “It has nothing to do with race and the way people twist it is disgusting.”
