ViscoSoft Select High Density Mattress Topper

The ViscoSoft Select High Density mattress topper features high-density gel-infused foam with perforations for airflow, as well as a bamboo rayon cover and adjustable no-slip straps.

Who is the ViscoSoft Select High Density Mattress Topper Best For?

A mattress topper can be a quick and inexpensive fix for a mattress that you don’t like, but there are  some things to consider before you buy one. It’s important to think about your primary sleep position, if you are a hot sleeper, if you have joint or back pain, and so on. To learn more, check out our best mattress toppers roundup.

I’ll get into all of that in this review, but first, here’s my quick recommendations of who this topper is a good choice for and who should consider something else.

Who I recommend the ViscoSoft Select High Density mattress topper for

  • I think the ViscoSoft Select High Density mattress topper is a great option for back and side sleepers. It offers nice pressure relief and softness, but is still quite supportive.
  • It’s also a good pick for combination sleepers, who change between sleeping positions at night. Moving around on top of this topper is pretty easy and you won’t feel stuck. Additionally, the topper has straps that hold it in place on the mattress, so it won’t move, even if you toss and turn.
  • Hot sleepers will also enjoy the ViscoSoft Select High Density mattress topper. The 3-inch gel-infused foam block used in the topper will help to draw heat away from the body. It also has perforations to promote airflow. Additionally, the cover has a slight cool-to-the-touch feel and will promote temperature regulation.
  • Finally, a somewhat more niche use, this topper would work well for sleeping in an RV or van. It is available in a short queen size, also known as RV size, which is not always offered among conventional sizes.

Who I don’t recommend the ViscoSoft Select High Density mattress topper for

  • I would not recommend this topper for stomach sleepers. I don’t think it is firm enough to keep their hips elevated. Sinking hips can cause the back to bend, which will lead to pain over time.
  • I also wouldn’t recommend this topper for anyone who wants a very soft topper with deep contouring. This topper does conform and mold around your body, but it has a more medium-firm feel.

What is the ViscoSoft Select High Density Mattress Topper Made Of?

If you’ve been shopping around for a mattress topper, you’ve probably seen a pretty wide variety of materials used in different toppers. What materials are used in the construction of a topper will really define how it will likely feel and perform, so it’s important to take a closer look at how they work.

ViscoSoft also makes two other versions of this topper that have infusions in them: one, lavender and the other, charcoal. The lavender infusion acts as aromatherapy, since lavender is a scent commonly used for calming and relaxation. The charcoal topper has an activated charcoal infusion to reduce odor and absorb moisture. But for this review, I tested the Original style, without infusions.

Cover: The ViscoSoft Select High Density mattress topper has a bamboo rayon cover. This cover is very breathable, thanks to the great temperature regulating properties of bamboo rayon fabric, as well as the slip resistant mesh bottom of the cover, which allows for airflow, in addition to keeping the topper in place. It’s also a completely removable and washable cover.

The cover of the topper also features elastic straps. Those straps are adjustable and are used to attach the topper to the mattress and hold it in place.

Fill: The fill of this topper is a 3-inch block of gel memory foam. Gel memory foam is commonly used to improve temperature regulation, as the gel draws heat away from the body. The foam is also ventilated, with small perforations throughout, to allow for airflow. That will help prevent body heat from being trapped in the foam. This foam is CertiPUR-US certified to be free of harmful chemicals and pollutants.

This foam is also high density foam, meaning that it has a high weight per cubic foot, or essentially that it’s very densely packed. You can think of it as the difference between loose snow on the ground and snow that has been packed into a snowball. That higher density not only makes the foam more durable and heavy, but also creates a supportive sleep surface.

How Does the ViscoSoft Select High Density Mattress Topper Feel?

I personally tested out this mattress topper by lying on it in different sleeping positions and assessing it for its overall feel. It’s important to remember that feel is subjective and can differ based on body type. For reference, I am in the average weight sleeper category, so lighter sleepers may not sink into the topper as much as I did and heavier sleepers may sink in more.

Generally, I thought this topper had a medium feel. The foam feels very cushy and soft, but it is actually quite supportive. While I didn’t experience deep contouring on this topper, the foam definitely does mold around your body as you lie on it, so it does conform around pressure points like shoulders and hips pretty well. The high density memory foam is also very supportive, keeping you elevated on the mattress.

Now, since one of the main purposes of a mattress topper is to alter the feel of your existing mattress, I tested this topper on mattresses of different firmness levels to see how it changed the feel. Here’s how I think this topper will affect different mattresses.

Soft: Adding this topper to a soft mattress did not radically change the feel in my opinion—it just made the bed a little softer and more plush. If you are looking for a memory foam topper to add to a soft mattress, the ViscoSoft Select High Density topper may actually be a good choice, as the high density foam is so supportive, so it won’t make the bed overly doughy.

Medium-firm: With the ViscoSoft Select High Density topper, a medium-firm mattress should feel closer to medium or medium-soft. I’d say this is especially a good choice for side sleepers, who may not get quite enough contouring from a medium-firm bed to get good spinal alignment and pressure relief.

Firm: I think adding this topper to a firm mattress will bring the firmness down to around medium-firm. This is a great option for people who need a little more pressure relief and cushioning from a mattress that’s too firm, particularly back and side sleepers

My Verdict on the ViscoSoft Select High Density Mattress Topper

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this topper. I loved the feel of it, from the soft cover to the cushy, but supportive high density foam beneath. I think that back and side sleepers, as well as combination back/side sleepers, will all find this topper to be very comfortable, offer pressure relief and cushioning, and help to soften a firm mattress. I wouldn’t recommend it for stomach sleepers, as it’s not firm enough to keep their hips elevated.

Some other features of this topper I really appreciated were the adjustable straps that hold the topper onto the bed, the washable cover, and the cooling features. While this topper is a bit pricey, I think it’s a really high quality sleep product that should have a long lifespan.

ViscoSoft Select High Density Mattress Topper Brand Policies and FAQs

Does the ViscoSoft Select High Density mattress topper come with a warranty?

Yes, it does come with a 5-year warranty. That’s definitely on the longer side for a mattress topper warranty, so that’s a plus. The warranty will cover any manufacturing defects.

Does the ViscoSoft Select High Density mattress topper have a trial period?

Yes, the ViscoSoft Select High Density mattress topper comes with a 60-night trial period. During this period, you can test the topper out at home and sleep on it. If you decide that the topper isn’t a good fit, you can return it within those 60 nights for a full refund.

Will the ViscoSoft Select High Density mattress topper get softer over time?

The high density foam used in this topper is high quality and very durable, so it should retain its shape and feel well over time.

Is the ViscoSoft Select High Density mattress topper easy to clean?

The removable cover of the ViscoSoft Select High Density mattress topper is machine washable, but the inner foam is not and should only be spot cleaned.

Where is the ViscoSoft Select High Density mattress topper made?

This mattress topper is made in the USA.

What size is the ViscoSoft Select High Density mattress topper?

The ViscoSoft Select High Density mattress topper is available in seven sizes: twin, twin XL, full, short queen, queen, king, and California king. The queen size is 79” x 59”.

What is the difference between a mattress topper, a mattress pad, and a mattress protector?

A mattress topper is generally very thick and cushy, and really alters the overall feel of a bed. A mattress pad usually has a soft, plush top and acts as a barrier between the mattress and the bedding. And a mattress protector is mainly just a barrier. Sometimes they are made with hypoallergenic materials.
