Is the Studio by Leesa a Good Mattress for You?

Before we get into the details, I’ll answer your most important question: will the Studio mattress work for you? Take a look at the lists below to find out!

Who I recommend the Studio by Leesa mattress for

  • First and foremost I’d recommend this bed to back sleepers. It provides some nice support and pressure relief that works well to keep the spine in a healthy, neutral alignment.
  • The Studio offers firm support that I think stomach sleepers are really going to enjoy. Your hips, shoulders, and spine should feel aligned when lying on your stomach.
  • Another perk of the Studio is its value. It’s a quality mattress at an affordable price, so if you’re on a tight budget, this may be worth a look. It is one of my picks for the best budget mattress!

Who I don’t recommend the Studio by Leesa mattress for

  • I don’t think the Studio is going to provide enough pressure relief for side sleepers. In my opinion, it isn’t firm enough to provide proper shoulder alignment, which can lead to shoulder pain.
  • The Studio also lacks the bounce of innerspring or hybrid mattresses. So if you’re looking for something that’s springier, I recommend going with something else.
  • Folks looking for a classic memory foam feel won’t find what they’re looking for on the Studio. I’d recommend they look for a soft or medium firm mattress.

What Does the Studio by Leesa Mattress Feel Like?

Now, let’s get more in-depth about how the Studio actually feels. To start us off, let’s look at its firmness.

Keep in mind that this isn’t a one-size-fits-all scenario — your ideal firmness level will depend on your body weight, shape, and other factors. So your preferences might be different than mine. For reference, I’m 5’10”, weigh 190 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my stomach.

Leesa Studio FirmnessThe Studio on the mattress firmness scale.

Once I gave the mattress a go, I decided to give it a 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for medium firmness is 6.5, so the Studio is definitely on the firmer side.

The Studio is especially firm for a memory foam mattress. I think is because the Studio’s high-density poly foam base gives it a lot of firm structure and support. This is especially nice for stomach and back sleepers, as they’ll be positioned more “on top” of this mattress than “in” it. This helps keep the spine, hips, and shoulders aligned.

That said, I don’t think this mattress is going to be soft enough for side sleepers in need of deep pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. If you’re someone looking for the traditional body-contouring feel of memory foam, the Studio is not the best mattress for you. I’d check out some of our best memory foam mattresses for a better fit.

Testing the Studio by Leesa Mattress

I don’t think your choice of mattress should depend solely on how firm a bed feels. With that in mind, I’m going to check out how the Studio does in terms of its pressure relief and motion transfer. Here, you’ll see those tests I talked about earlier.

Pressure Relief

To start, let’s see how well this bed relieves pressure. What’s pressure relief, you ask? Essentially, this is how the mattress stacks up when it comes to alleviating tension at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. To get a good idea of the Studio’s pressure relieving capabilities, I tried it out while lying on my back, side, and stomach.

To illustrate the results of my pressure relief tests, I used a pressure map. For reference, the map uses a gradient from blue to red — blue means no detectable pressure and red means very high pressure.

Leesa Studio Pressure MapPressure map results for the Studio by Leesa.

Back — There Leesa offered solid pressure relief on my back, it supported the alignment of my hips and spine. This support can help reduce pain in these areas. So if you’re a back sleeper, I highly recommend this mattress.

Side — Moving on to my side, I found the Studio was a bit too firm. Side sleepers tend to feel pressure in their shoulders, hips, and lower back if a mattress isn’t soft enough. I think strict side sleepers will want to go with something plusher to prevent feeling jammed up at their pressure points.

Stomach— Switching to my stomach, I found that the Leesa evenly distributed my weight across the mattress. Since I recommend stomach sleepers stick with a firmer feel to keep their spine properly aligned, I think they’ll enjoy the support the Studio offers.

Leesa Studio Back SleepersThe Studio is a great choice for back sleepers.

Motion Transfer

Next, we come to the motion transfer test. When I refer to motion transfer, I’m talking about the amount of movement you can notice from end-to-end on the mattress. For anyone who shares a bed or is in the market for a mattress for couples, how well a bed isolates motion can be a critical factor.

To test out the Studio’s motion isolation, I dropped a 10 lb. steel ball onto the mattress from three different heights. The 4” drop imitated tossing and turning in the bed, and the 8” drop imitated getting out of bed. Finally, the 12” inch drop told me what it would feel like if my bedmate started to live out their childhood dream of jumping on the bed.

Leesa Studio Motion TransferThe Studio’s motion transfer results.

Take a look at the results in the graphic above. For reference, the bigger lines indicate more disturbance.

I was really impressed by the Studio’s ability to isolate motion! As you can see in the graphic, there was really low disturbance from all of the bounce tests I performed. This is thanks in large part to the bed’s high-quality memory foam layer, which works to absorb and dissipate motion evenly across the structure.

What is the Studio by Leesa Mattress Made of?

The Studio mattress combines layers of plush memory foam with supportive poly foam to establish a balanced feel. There’s also some intriguing moisture-wicking properties at play that I’m super excited to uncover!

What interested me in the Studio is that it combines the softness of memory foam with the structured support of polyurethane foam and high-density poly foam. When combined, you get a mattress that’s as comfy as it is durable. And let’s not forget the breathable, moisture-wicking cover, which gives it a nice, cool feel!

Ready to see how these materials come together? Let’s take a look, one layer at a time!

Cover — Kicking us off is the polyester cover. This breathable fabric contains moisture-wicking properties to help keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night.

Comfort Layer — After this is a layer of contouring memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, so it provides space for the sleeper to sink in for pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and lower back.

Transition Layer — Next up, you’ll land on a transition layer of polyurethane foam. This material has a quicker response to pressure than the memory foam above it, so it works to curb some of the sinkage of that top layer. It also helps to ease the sleeper into the firmer foundation foam below.

Base Layer — Down at the base is a layer of high-density poly foam. This tall foam is incredibly durable and provides the mattress with its shape and stability. This tall layer of firm foam is the reason the Leesa feels a bit firmer than other foam beds.

My Final Thoughts about the Studio by Leesa Mattress

To wrap things up, I’ll summarize a few of my favorite, and least favorite, things about the Studio.

My favorite things about the Studio by Leesa

Along with providing good pressure relief (especially for back and stomach sleepers), the Studio does a fantastic job at isolating motion from one side of the mattress to the other. I’d highly recommend it to stomach or back sleepers  looking for firm support to keep their spines in a straight line.

I also really appreciate the Studio’s price! If you’re a budget shopper the Studio could be a great fit for you. In fact, Sleepopolis ranks it as one of the year’s best mattresses for the money.

My complaints about the Studio by Leesa

That said, I didn’t love everything about this bed. It doesn’t offer enough sinkage for side sleepers who need a lot of pressure relief around their shoulders and hips. The Studio is also not a very responsive mattress, so you’ll feel more “in” than “on” this bed. That’s not a great sign for combination sleepers. But, if you sleep with a partner this might actually end up being one of your favorite things about the Studio, since you won’t feel disturbed by tossing and turning on this mattress.

And finally, this mattress may not have enough support for heavier sleepers. They might sink through the comfort layers too quickly and find this bed too firm for their liking.

Leesa Studio Side SleepersThe  Studio isn’t great for side sleepers.

Studio by Leesa Mattress Policies and FAQs

Are Leesa mattresses made in the USA?

Yep! All Leesa mattresses are proudly made in the USA, which works great if you’re in the market for an American-built mattress.

How long do Leesa mattresses last?

This depends on multiple factors, including but not limited to a person’s sleep position, weight, and whether or not they share a mattress. I recommend reassessing your mattress needs every three to five years.

Can I put a Leesa mattress on a box spring?

While you can, it isn’t necessary to use a box spring with Leesa mattresses. This is a money saver if you weren’t sure whether or not you needed to buy a box spring.

Does Leesa offer a sleep trial?

Yes, Leesa offers a 100-night sleep trial.

How does the Studio by Leesa ship?

The Studio mattress will ship free to your door. It will arrive compressed in a box, so may need a few hours to expand before you sleep on it.

Does Leesa offer a warranty?

Yes, Leesa offers a 10 year warranty on this bed.

Other Models from Leesa

As I mentioned up top, Leesa makes a few different mattresses. So, let’s see how the Studio compares to the other beds this mattress company offers.

Studio by Leesa Mattress vs Leesa Original Mattress

  • The all-foam Leesa Original is a bit softer than the Studio. This gives it a nice balance between softness and firmness that should appeal to a wide range of sleepers.
  • I found the Leesa Original sleeps cooler than the Studio because it’s memory foam layer is underneath a layer of more cooling foam. The Studio’s memory foam comfort layer tends to trap heat.

  • Unlike the Studio, the Leesa Hybrid consists of both foam and coil layers, which gives it a bouncier feel than the all-foam Studio.
  • The Leesa Hybrid is softer than the Studio, so side sleepers will likely prefer this mattress.
  • The Leesa Hybrid offers great edge support, which might appeal to couples.

Studio by Leesa Mattress vs Leesa Legend Mattress

  • The Leesa Legend is a hybrid mattress that’s quite a bit softer than the Studio. Side sleepers will prefer the plusher Leesa Legend.
  • I don’t think the Leesa Legend provides the right amount of firmness for stomach sleepers — these folks should stick with the Studio.
  • Budget shoppers will prefer the cheaper Studio.

Logan Block

Logan is the content director of Sleepopolis, which means he not only reviews new mattresses every week, but also curates all the comparisons, best of pages, and video guides on the site. He takes a straightforward, honest approach to his reviews and endeavors to give viewers an objective look at each new product he tries out. Logan has perfected his method by personally testing over 200 different mattresses, so he’s not only able to discern the overall vibe of a specific bed, but to contextualize its feel within the bed-in-a-box market as a whole. When he’s not hopping on a new bed or working with our editorial team to whip up an engaging sleep education guide, you can find him reading books on world history, walking his dog Pepper, or searching for the best cheeseburger in New York City.
