Nintendo Life | Latest Updates

July was a slightly quieter month for large eShop digital publications, but not a month goes by without at least a few goodies worth your time.

These awards are designed to celebrate the best of Nintendo’s digital store and to bring some love and attention to the games that could so easily be overlooked in the Switch’s ever-growing library.

So let’s get started. Here are the best Switch eShop games of July 2021!

Honorable mentions:

These titles didn’t quite make it into the top 3 this month, but they’re still worth a look:

The procession to Calvary (Switch eShop)The procession to Calvary (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Digerati / Developer: Joe Richardson

Release date: July 1, 2021 (USA) / July 1, 2021 (UK / EU)

In third place this month we have The Procession To Calvary, a whole different point-and-click adventure with awesome humor.

We could all use some fun these days, and The Procession To Calvary sure has a good laugh or two. The game lets you solve puzzles, help NPCs, and run errands, all in a point-and-click format that encourages you to experiment, but it combines all of this with a great script to keep you busy.

It’s not without its flaws, but we encourage you to read our full thoughts on the subject if you are interested in trying it out.

Risk system (change eShop)Risk system (change eShop)

Publisher: Hidden trap / Developer: Newt Industries

Release date: 07/15/2021 (USA) / 07/15/2021 (UK / EU)

In second place we jump to Risk System, a shmup that feels refreshingly welcome for less experienced players in a genre that sometimes feels a little too brutal.

We gave it an 8/10 in our test and praised its well-designed stages, memorable boss fights, and accessibility. You have three lives to play with, you can restart levels you fail at without going back to the beginning of the game, and you can try boss fights over and over again, making the game more challenging to keep each stage on your own Mastering speed than having to memorize every single pattern in order to erase everything at once.

It might not be for all shmup fans and it’s a little on the short side, but we’ve had a great time with this one over the past few weeks.

Blaster Master Zero 3 (Switch-eShop)Blaster Master Zero 3 (Switch-eShop)

Publisher: Inti created / Developer: Inti created

Release date: Jul 29, 2021 (USA) / July 29, 2021 (UK / EU)

The biggest prize of all, however, goes to the unique Blaster Master Zero 3.

In our test, we couldn’t stop praising this one and calling it a masterful conclusion to the trilogy. The show’s mix of side scrolling and top-down action is arguably the most polished here, and offers a truly satisfying, retro-style platform experience.

This third entry has a well-implemented dark world mechanic to shake things up a bit, great level design, memorable boss encounters, and more, which helps us recommend this – along with the two previous entries – as a series that you definitely want should consider your game library.

There’s a reason Blaster Master Zero 3 ran away with our employee poll this month – definitely check it out!

<Nintendo Life eShop Picks – June 2021

This is how we decide our eShop selects the top 3: At the end of each month, Nintendo Life employees vote on their favorite titles from a list of games selected by the editorial team. To qualify for this list, those games must have been released as a digital-only Nintendo Switch eShop title and reviewed on Nintendo Life that particular month; We select the qualifying games based on their evaluation results.

Staff will then be asked to vote for three games that they believe deserve to be at the top of that list. The first choice receives 3 points, the second choice 2 points and the third choice 1 point. These votes are then added together to create a top 3 list, with the overall winner receiving the month’s grand prize.
