Twitter Inc is closing its reopened U.S. offices while other major tech companies are making vaccination mandatory for campus workers as the highly contagious Delta-COVID-19 variant causes resurgence in cases. Alphabet Inc’s Google and Facebook Inc said Wednesday that all U.S. employees must be vaccinated to enter offices.

Google plans to expand its vaccination campaign to other regions in the coming months. Twitter, which also paused future office openings on Wednesday, began allowing employees to return to its San Francisco and New York locations at 50 percent capacity about a fortnight ago after more than 16 months of U.S. coronavirus cases increased due to the delta variant. which showed up in India but spread quickly and now accounts for more than 80% of US coronavirus cases.

Health officials said Tuesday that Americans fully vaccinated against COVID-19 should return to wearing masks in public places indoors in regions where the coronavirus is spreading rapidly. San Francisco-based ride-hailing company Lyft Inc, which had already mandated vaccinations for employees returning to the office, postponed its reopening from September to February.

“We anticipate the COVID situation will remain fluid in the coming months, making it difficult for us to get a clear return date without the possibility of postponing again,” Lyft CEO Logan Green said in a memo to the employees. Streaming giant Netflix Inc has also put in place a policy requiring cast and crew vaccinations for all of its US productions, according to a deadline report.

Apple Inc plans to restore its mask requirements in most of its U.S. retail stores for both customers and employees, even if they are vaccinated, Bloomberg News reported.

Apple and Netflix did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Many tech companies, including Microsoft Corp and Uber, have said they expect employees to return to their offices months after a pandemic forced them to work from home. Google also said on Wednesday that it will extend its work from home policy to October 18, as cases in various regions have recently increased due to the Delta variant.
