Donald Trump was a “losing president,” said Illinois Republican Adam Kinzinger after the former president held a rally insisting on winning last year’s presidential election.
Trump held a rally in Ohio on Saturday night where he continued to claim for no reason that his defeat was unlawful.
Republican Senator Mitt Romney compared the rally to professional wrestling and said it was “entertaining but it’s not real”.
Rep. Kinzinger, who voted for impeachment against Trump on Jan. 6, told CNN that he “hoped” Romney was right, but added, “There are a lot of people …”
He said, “What you saw yesterday was a re-use of those old topics of conversation. It was a rally by a losable president.
“He is the first president in decades to lose re-election. I don’t know why these people go there and essentially stare at a loser and, in many cases, just worship a loser, but they did. “
Also referring to a conspiracy theory circulating among Trump supporters, Kinzinger said that he would be reinstated as president later this summer, saying, “There are shockingly enough people who believe he will become president in August.”
Kinzinger also said it was “high time” for Republican colleagues – many of whom have refused to reject Trump’s unsubstantiated election claims – to recognize Joe Biden as the legitimate president.
He has often criticized Republican colleagues for failing to claim that Trump’s election claims are unfounded.
In May, he said of Trump that Republican voters “have abused their patriotism from someone who simply wants to use it to maintain power.”
