“President Trump spent four years repairing the border. But the Biden administration broke it again and we are now experiencing the worst border crisis in our history,” Banks said in a statement. “That is why the RSC has made carrying on the Trump legacy on immigration our top priority in this Congress and why we are going to the border with President Trump to explain how we can end this national embarrassment.”
The border appearance will be the second meeting this month between Trump and members of the RSC, a sign of how tightly the broader GOP conference is hugging the former president. Earlier this month, House Republican leaders met with Trump at his Bedminster resort in New Jersey, and RSC members have invited Trump to meet with them in Washington.
Republicans see their grassroots as a winning message when they persecute Biden’s government for dealing with rising migrant crossings. Earlier this year, several of the House’s GOP groups migrated to the US-Mexico border to raise awareness of the problem.
The RSC has played a key role in shaping the GOP’s messages on immigration, including developing a leadership-shared framework that the banks have called “the guard rails for any future immigration deal.”
Also coming to Trump on the border next week is Texas GOP Governor Greg Abbott, who recently announced that the state would build its own border wall because of its tough approach to immigration.
