Steam adds further restrictions to prevent regional price abuse

Steam offers games at different prices in different regions to make games cheaper in areas where people can generally afford them less. Of course, people have long tried to bypass the system with VPNs at cheaper prices, and Valve put up a number of restrictions to combat the practice. Now there is a limit to how many times you can change the country of your Steam account.

You can now only change the country associated with your Steam account every three months as determined by SteamDB. It gets a chore if you actually change countries more than quarterly, but I can’t imagine that this will be a problem for too many of you out there.

In either case, you must confirm each country change by making a purchase using a payment method from that country. It’s another VPN-fighting measure that Valve introduced a year ago. VPN use is already against Steam’s Terms of Service, so Valve can ban anyone who takes advantage of regional pricing – but it’s certainly easier if they can stop you from trying it in the first place.

If you’re looking for some Valve-approved cheap Steam games, the 2021 Steam Summer Sale is less than 24 hours away. There are also plenty of free Steam games to play if your gaming budget is particularly limited.
