As with most mattress-in-a-box companies, Purple ships their beds direct to your door for free. Instead of coming in a box, however, the mattress comes rolled up in a thick plastic sleeve with handles that make it convenient to move around – although it’s quite heavy.

Once you’ve found it and rolled it out, Purple will offer a 100-night risk-free trial. So if you decide the bed is not for you during this time, just give the company a call. They will refund your money and send someone to collect it for free.

Purple also backs their mattress with a 10 year warranty, which is standard for the online mattress industry.

Purple entered the bed-in-a-box game in 2013 and has since grown to become one of the largest and most popular brands in the industry. And much of that success can be attributed to the unique construction of the mattress.

Like many bed-in-a-box mattresses, the Purple bed contains a few layers of foam. The lower two layers are both made of polyurethane foam. The bottom layer gives the bed its foundation and support, while the middle layer is a little thinner and is supposed to absorb pressure.

But what sets Purple apart from all other companies is its top layer. Instead of using gel memory foam, latex foam, or a proprietary blend, the company uses a material called a hyperelastic polymer.

The material is actually patented by the founders of Purple, one of whom is a true rocket scientist. This 2-inch top layer is laid out in a grid formation.

The material feels like little squares of gel, but it’s not actually gel. It’s a pretty unique feel – it’s super soft and flexible, but also very responsive.

And when you lie down on the bed, you can literally feel yourself shifting the lattice formation. The small squares fold, bend, compress and adapt to the shape of the body.

I have to admit it was a bit weird at first, but after a while you start to really like the feeling.

The wrapping of the 3 layers is a soft, comfortable cover. As with most bed-in-a-box mattresses, the company recommends only spot cleaning the cover instead of machine washing it.

For increased protection from stains and dirt, check out the Purple Mattress Protector, which costs anywhere from $ 49 to $ 69 depending on the size.

Or you can always just buy a cheaper mattress cover from Amazon. We found that mattress protectors can certainly be helpful, but they limit how much you feel the real mattress itself as you add another layer. Just keep that in mind.

Overall, we’re big fans of the Purple mattress for feel. And a big part of that ranking is down to Purple’s special top layer. It’s super soft and comfortable, and does an incredible job of rocking your pressure points (i.e. hips, shoulders).

As for hardness, we’d give the mattress a 4.5 / 10 on our soft-to-firm scale, so it’s definitely on the softer side of the spectrum. But don’t let this score fool you, the bed still offers some support, which speaks for the unique effect of the hyperelastic polymer.

Although it is soft and easy to weigh, you never have the feeling of sinking into the mattress.

Therefore, we believe that this bed is suitable for all types of sleepers. No matter what position you are in (back, stomach or side), the bed always seems to offer just the right amount of pressure relief and support.

Lila likes to say “softly where you want it and firm where you need it” and we have to agree. However, if you weigh 250 pounds or more, you may actually want to look for a firmer mattress for more support.

We think purple will be fine for most people, but if you want more firmness or want to share a bed with kids, starting firm is probably the way to go, as most of these beds will soften over time.

Another important topic in the mattress industry is temperature regulation and here, too, Purple scores. The shell is decently thin, and hyperelastic polymer is generally a cooler material than memory foam or latex foam, so it has an advantage there.

The top layer is also in a grid formation, creating columns that support the flow of air. The result is a mattress that doesn’t heat up at night. We tested this mattress on the hot summer nights of Sacramento, California and had no problems.

Motion transfer is another area where Purple does very well. We were a bit skeptical at first as this top layer is not memory foam or latex foam, but our concerns were short-lived.

We put a can on one of the beds and then started rolling / walking near the can and it never toppled over. Hence, we can say with reasonable certainty that this bed is fine if you or your partner are active sleepers. We don’t imagine that you often wake up in the middle of the night.

In terms of responsiveness, unlike memory foam, the hyperelastic top layer snaps back to its original shape almost immediately after the pressure has been released. Even if you feel yourself moving in the grid, the mattress does not leave any impression on your body.

All of this means that we don’t envision sinking in with this mattress – we think it will be quite durable in the long run.

Lila is one of the more expensive bed-in-a-box mattresses, but we wouldn’t really call it expensive. It’s typically $ 100 to $ 200 more expensive than competitive beds.

The only factor about Purple is that they very rarely offer proper coupon codes. So while you can almost always find mattress coupons for other brands, Purple claims this is a premium mattress that is affordable enough. It is difficult to argue against this.

Here is a breakdown of purple prices:

While Purple doesn’t offer promo codes, they often do have special offers – you can check it out Purple’s website for offers and promotions. Sometimes they throw sheets or a seat cushion with them when buying a mattress.

The quintessence of Purple is that this bed has a unique feeling that we have not experienced in any other bed. It’s comfortable, cool, responsive, and does a great job with limited motion transfer.

This bed will take a while to get used to, but if you’re not sold by memory foam or latex foam and want to try something new, purple is a very good option. We don’t love their prices, but we really like their bed.
