Carly Telford was named to the GB women’s squad for the Olympics after Karen Bardsley was forced to resign due to injury.
The Chelsea goalkeeper helped England to the semi-finals of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup – an accomplishment that secured GB Football its place in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which will begin next month.
Telford said, “This is an incredible honor, although I truly sympathize with KB and send all of my best wishes for her speedy recovery.
“The goalkeepers union is not a cliché – even though we are competing for a game, we always want each other to do well. I am so disappointed in her, but of course also incredibly proud to be able to play at the Olympic Games, an incredible honor and I will give everything I can. “
Although Sandy MacIver is on the reserve list, head coach Hege Riise chose Telford as a direct replacement for Bardsley based on her experience.
She will now compete with Ellie Roebuck to start when the games begin against Chile on July 21st.
Riise said: “We are very fortunate to have a goalkeeper from Carly’s pedigree. Losing Karen was a blow, of course, but her selection has always been close to Carly as they both have such a good reputation. Carly is a leader and it will be a great asset to us and what we want to achieve. “
