Redfall brings Dishonored developer’s signature gameplay to FPS games

Redfall is the next game from the developers of Dishonored and Prey for Arkane and not the subtitle for The Elder Scrolls VI. A CG reveal trailer for the game served as the big “one more thing” moment at the end of the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase, but aside from the setting reveal and co-op focus, it didn’t show much of how Redfall actually goes about it play. While the details are still vague, some follow-up information has made what we can expect a little clearer.

“Redfall is an open-world co-op FPS from Arkane Austin, the award-winning team behind Prey and Dishonored,” the developers say on the official website. “Redfall continues Arcane’s legacy of carefully crafted worlds and a love of creative gameplay, bringing the studio’s signature gameplay to the cooperative action and FPS genres.”

Reading between the lines, the implication seems that this is going to be a lot more action packed than Arkane’s previous games. Immersive Sims like Dishonored will certainly get you into combat, but the balance has been weighted more and more to encourage camouflage. It sounds like the scales could tip the other way for Redfall, but in another version, the developers mention that you can expect more “subtle” character builds too.

While Redfall primarily offers co-op functionality, it will also be fully solo playable. You’ll find loot, gain new skills, and clear outposts on a large open-world map that “responds to your decisions and actions”.

FPS games with a bit of RPG games? Not a surprising combination these days, but Arkane has plenty of room to come up with your own version of the formula. Redfall is currently scheduled to hit the market in the summer of 2022.
