Types of mattresses

Pocket spring core, latex, hybrid and memory foam mattresses all convinced us in our tough tests. So the choice of mattress really depends on your personal preferences and budget.

Pocket spring mattresses

If you want a traditional mattress with a natural filling like wool, you need a pocket spring mattress.

With these, each spring is enclosed in its own fabric bag – each one reacts independently to pressure from your body. However, these can be expensive, and our tests show that some can sag significantly over time.

Memory foam mattresses

Memory foam mattresses can be more durable and conform to your body shape, but in some cases this can raise your body temperature and restrict your movement.

How much does a good mattress cost?

However, as the graph below shows, our mattress tests have shown that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a mattress that will support your spine and last for years. Take a look at our list of best cheap mattresses.

Which are the best brands of mattresses?

Our April 2019 survey of 5,000+ mattress owners found that three in ten What? Members bought their current mattress because it is made by a brand they trust. If you’re not sure what the best brands of mattresses are, we can help.

Soft vs. firm mattresses

When it comes to firmness, the most important thing is to buy a mattress that you can find comfortable.

Don’t buy a mattress that is firmer than you’d like if you expect it to be more supportive. Our tests have shown time and time again that you don’t have to buy a firm mattress to get great, long-lasting support.

Also, don’t assume that a firm mattress in one store will feel the same in other stores. Firmness is subjective and manufacturers describe the firmness of their mattresses in different ways.

That is why we do not use terms like soft and firm in our reviews. Instead, we objectively test mattress hardness on a scale of one to 10, with one being the hardest and 10 the softest, so you can easily compare the hardness of different mattresses.

We also measure how supportive each mattress is for different heights and sleeping positions. So if you prefer to sleep on the front, side or back, you’ve come to the right place.

Best Mattresses: Features To Look For

Since mattresses only have one basic function – to help us fall asleep, they are not overloaded with gaudy features. But there are a few more things to keep in mind.

  • One-sided As the name suggests, only one side of a single-sided mattress is intended for sleeping. Mattresses can be extremely heavy – the heaviest we’ve ever seen weigh more than 50 kg – so you can be relieved that you don’t feel obliged to turn them over. You will still likely have to twist it from head to toe though, so checking out the usability rating on ours is a good idea Mattress ratings.
  • Natural fillings Many pocket spring mattresses also contain layers of synthetic fillings such as foam. If you want to avoid these, watch out for mattresses that specifically claim to be made from only natural materials. However, look carefully at the claims, some may just have a symbolic layer of natural materials.
  • Memory foam Just because a mattress contains memory foam does not mean it is a memory foam mattress. We only classify a mattress as memory foam if it contains more than just a symbolic layer of the body-shaping material. See all of our Reviews of memory foam mattresses.

Try it before you buy it

Buying a mattress online can be cheaper and more convenient, but unless you’re buying a bed-in-a-box mattress (see below) it’s always best to try it before buying if you can – and the shops are open.

When we asked which one? More than a third of them reported their experience of buying a mattress that they felt intimidated to try a mattress in a store. A good mattress store shouldn’t mind that. See our guide on the best mattress stores.

When trying out a mattress in the store:

  • Wear comfortable clothing and take off your outdoor gear.
  • Lie on a mattress in a position where you normally sleep for at least 10 minutes.
  • If the bed is for two, go with your partner.
  • Don’t buy beds when you are tired as all mattresses are nice to the touch.
  • Don’t let sellers influence you – they can’t decide if the mattress is comfortable for you.

When you buy a memory foam mattress, relax in one position and then switch to another. Was it easy or did you struggle to move? In the latter case, you may find that the memory mattress restricts your movement too much, especially in cold weather when the memory foam is harder.

Make sure your mattress matches your bed frame

Manufacturers may recommend that you buy a mattress and bed frame together, and this is a good idea if you have had your old bed for many years.

If you’re buying the mattress and base separately or want to keep your old base, measure carefully to make sure they fit well. Dimensions can vary so don’t rely on a new twin mattress to be exactly the same size as your old one.

Is your mattress on a slatted frame? Make sure that the slats are no wider than 6 cm and no more than 4 cm apart. This ensures adequate ventilation and at the same time prevents the mattress from sagging between the slats.
