In the letter: Reports of USB connectivity issues on AMD X570 and B550 motherboards have circled the forums since the boards were released, but the problem recently worsened on Reddit. AMD responded with a simple statement: They are not sure what the problem is and they want to collect more data.
Over the past few months, reports of sporadic USB interruptions on 500-series motherboards have accumulated on the desk of AMD’s subreddit. Some users have reported that their keyboard suddenly stops responding for 5 to 10 seconds every few minutes. Other users are complaining that their mouse is getting slower. Sound card owners speak of crackling and distortion.
The strangest thing about the problem is that it seems new – because X570 and B550 boards aren’t. While the first complaints were published over a year ago, their frequency seems to have increased exponentially over the past month. Some Redditors recently created a statistics table that users can use to share their problems and system specifications. It seems that the problem mainly occurs in systems with new RTX GPUs.
But don’t worry, a flagship GPU isn’t a necessity. A mid-range GPU and some high-bandwidth devices, like external hard drives, external recording devices, or VR headsets and tracking stations, seem to do just the right thing. And it’s not just the high bandwidth device that is having the problem. Anything connected to the same system can be affected, including internally connected devices like CPU coolers – which is a very serious problem.
Some workarounds have been found by the community. The first point of contact: Deactivating “c-state” in the BIOS. There will be no penalty and the frequency of disconnections can be cut in half. However, if that doesn’t work, you can switch from PCIe 4.0 to PCIe 3.0 or search the BIOS and disable any USB port / header that you are not using. If you do all three of these steps, disconnections will stop for most users, but not power users. Streamers with a capture card, microphone, webcam, and the usual peripherals are basically out of luck.
This is where AMD comes in. You asked anyone who was having issues to report them on the AMD website. You will also notify some people who have commented on their issues on Reddit.
An update on USB connectivity to r / Amd 500 series chipset motherboards
Hopefully AMD can fix these issues quickly with a firmware update. In the meantime, our best advice for new system builders is to go for an AMD GPU that can be paired with X570 and B550 motherboards as the combination seems almost hassle-free.
